WVU-LES MODEL OVERVIEW
Fluid mechanics:
- Fully 3d, unsteady, incompressible simulation
- Multiple grids and variable grid spacing allowing large domains ( ~1 km)
with fine spacing (< 1 m) where needed. Typically ~ 2.5x106 grid points.
- Subgrid turbulence model including buoyancy and rotational effects
Ice parameterization:
- Bulk microphysics in terms of total water, ice mass, and ice crystal number
density
- Includes: diffusional growth/sublimation, sedimentation, buoyancy due to
latent heat release, perturbation pressure effects.
- Not included in current simulations: ice nucleation, coalescence, radiation, or "multi bin" ice spectrum.
