Atmospheric Turbulence Research at WVU

Theoretical Investigation of Turbulent Dynamics in the Tornado Vortex

The wind and pressure field close to the surface in the inner region of a tornado are being modeled using high-resolution, fully 3D unsteady simulations. Investigators hope to explain the role turbulence plays in determining the unique flow interaction with the surface which permits maximum low-level wind speeds to exceed that achievable by a straight exchange of storm potential energy for kinetic energy.
